Spa sells $2800 with one .79 cent postcard
Just got a very happy email this morning from one of our clients:
“I just wanted to pass this on to you… Yesterday I had a return client come in and have over $2800 worth of services done due to the . . . card you sent. Kudos! ~ Roger
Funny thing is, we only sent these postcards to a total of 19 people. That’s right – only 19!
So what did these “magic” postcards say?
Believe it or not, they said “Happy Birthday”, along with a special offer and a deadline. Now don’t get me wrong – it wasn’t the offer on the card that made the client spend $2800 . . . however, chances are VERY good this client would never have come in and spent that money had we NOT sent the birthday postcard.
And chances are ALSO good that he may never have come in had we ONLY sent email instead of also sending a postcard.
In fact, the reason we only had 19 postcards to send was NOT because Roger’s spa is new – it’s not. Roger’s has been in business for years. But before he met us, Roger made the fatal mistake we see so many spa owners make – a long time ago he stopped collecting “regular” addresses, and was only collecting emails.
This “email only” mentality just plain wrong – if you’re only collecting emails from your clients, you’re costing yourself a fortune in potential sales! Without full contact information, you risk LOSING the ability to contact your clients when they do something as routine as switch email providers. This is MARKETING SUICIDE.
You should be collecting ALL of your client’s contact information:
- Regular Addresses
- Email
- Phone Number
- Permission to send text messages (SMS)
You should also be collecting their birthday, anniversary and any other information they will give you so you can send them highly-targeted marketing campaigns in the future.
However, to get them to volunteer this information, they need to know “what’s in it for me?” Otherwise, when you ask for all that info they’ll probably feel like you’re intruding. It’s easy – all you have to do is say “We ask you for your birthday because we’re going to send you free gift certificate worth $XX”. With most people, that’s all the motivation they need.
Without question, one of the most consistently profitable campaigns our clients do every month are birthday campaigns. Sure, not too many of them make $2800 sales from a single client . . . but, depending on the size of their list, it’s not uncommon for a spa to make $3500-$5000 on this campaign alone.
